Oquossoc is a small village located in rural western Maine, near Mooselookmeguntic Lake. The Oquossoc area is mostly known among hikers who come to climb Bald Mountain, Aziscohos Mountain, West Kennebago Mountain and the Appalachia Trail. Bald Mountain, especially, is an excellent trail for families, being a fairly easy trail with very good conditions. It offers spectacular views of the mountains and surrounding areas, although avid hikers might find it a little short. There are also several hiking trails found around Mooselookmeguntic Lake, which is one of the largest lakes in the state of Maine. This lake is very popular among anglers because it's filled with salmon, brook trout, brown trout and several other species of fish. The land surrounding Mooselookmeguntic Lake boasts nine major protected land parcels, with public access, that can be used for recreation such as camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. It's not unusual to encounter moose or deer, and occasionally even black bear, along the country roads around Oquossoc. Other activities in the area include swimming, boating, sailing, water skiing and biking. In the wintertime, nearby Saddleback Mountains provides cross-country skiing, sledding and snowmobiling. Oquossoc is about 4 miles to the town of Rangeley, which offers dining of every kind, lodging, golf, and several festivals throughout the year.

Oquossoc Weather & Climate

Northwestern Maine near the New Hampshire state line enjoys four distinct seasons typical of the New England climate. Mild to warm days with cool evenings, and occasional showers and thunderstorms can be expected in summer. It rarely becomes hot and humid enough to be considered uncomfortable. Fall is spectacular - crisp, cool days and cold nights, and often the most number of sunny days during the year. Winter begins around Thanksgiving, or sometimes even earlier in the month, and January and February are generally the coldest months. The average annual snowfall is around 85-100 inches. Most snowfall occurs in eight to ten measurable storms of 6 inches to a foot. True winter blizzards are rare in Maine, although some winter storms are accompanied by high winds. Temperatures begin to increase in March, along with an increase in humidity, which often results in snowstorms or thunderstorms, depending on the temperature.
