Mooselookmeguntic-Lake is a picturesque lake located in the western mountains of Maine, in what is generally referred to as the "Rangeley Lakes Region." The interesting name "Mooselookmeguntic" is said to have come from an ancient Abanaki word meaning "portage to the moose feeding place, or moose feeding among the trees." The lake is 16,300 acres in size, which makes it one of the largest in the state of Maine, running a close second to Sebago Lake. Toothaker Island sits in the middle of Mooselookmeguntic Lake, and the lake is filled with salmon, brook trout, brown trout and other species of fish, making it a very popular fishing spot. There are also excellent hiking trails around the lake, including part of the Appalachian Trial, which provides a route to the Height of Land Overlook and a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding areas. The land surrounding Mooselookmeguntic Lake boasts nine major protected land parcels, with public access that can be used for recreation such as camping, walking and hiking, and wildlife viewing. Mooselookmeguntic Lake is about a 7-mile drive to the small village of Oquossoc and 14 miles to the center of Rangeley Village, where you will find lots of restaurants, golf and year round festivals. Snowmobiling and skiing at Saddleback Mountain is also just a short drive from Mooselookmeguntic Lake.

Mooselookmeguntic Lake Weather & Climate

Northwestern Maine near the New Hampshire state line enjoys four distinct seasons typical of the New England climate. Mild to warm days with cool evenings, and occasional showers and thunderstorms can be expected in summer. It rarely becomes hot and humid enough to be considered uncomfortable. Fall is spectacular - crisp, cool days and cold nights, and often the most number of sunny days during the year. Winter begins around Thanksgiving, or sometimes even earlier in the month, and January and February are generally the coldest months. The average annual snowfall is around 85-100 inches. Most snowfall occurs in eight to ten measurable storms of 6 inches to a foot. True winter blizzards are rare in Maine, although some winter storms are accompanied by high winds. Temperatures begin to increase in March, along with an increase in humidity, which often results in snowstorms or thunderstorms, depending on the temperature.
