Upton
is a small village of less than 100 residents located near "The Umbagog Area of New Hampshire and Maine," in Oxford County. Author Richard E. Pinette described this area as "nature's playground with a rich forestland heritage." It is, indeed, an area steeped in history of old time logging days, but today offers four seasons of outdoor recreation on thousands of acres of forestland, and miles of scenic waterways. The Umbagog region is also the "undisputed Snowmobile Capital of the Northeast," with hundreds of miles of woodland snowmobile trails that wind along mountains and valleys, and beside pristine rivers and lakes. Nearby, the town of Errol marks the beginning of the "Thirteen Mile Woods," an unspoiled stretch of beautiful woodlands along the Androscoggin River, an area known for its canoeing, kayaking and fishing opportunities. The Northern Forest Heritage Park, near Upton, recreates the logging camps of yesteryear and also provides pontoon boat rides on the Androscoggin River. Other points of interest include the "Floating Islands," a wilderness wetlands listed in the Natural Register of Historic Landmarks and Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1992. Upton is also just a short drive to the popular Rangeley Lakes Recreational Region and the Rapid River's legendary trout and salmon fishing.

The Sunday River area of Maine, near the towns of Bethel and Norway Lakes, is situated in the western part of the state north of Portland. This area enjoys four distinct seasons, with cold, snowy winters. January temperatures generally range from 11 to 31 degrees F., and single digits at night are common. Below zero temperatures are a possibility, but usually do not stick around for long. Temperatures start to warm up in March, but snow is still possible into early April. Generally, summers are mild with a greater range of temperatures the further inland you travel. Autumn often sees some of the best weather in Maine, with mild, sunny days and crisp cool nights - perfect for viewing the spectacular fall foliage. Rain is possible anytime of the year in Maine, but most often occurs in spring and summer. Thunderstorms are possible and average annual rainfall is western Maine is 51 inches.
