Rumford
is located in the western mountains of Maine in the River Valley Region. This area is at the center of Maine’s forest industry and is surrounded by the Androscoggin River and numerous crystal clear lakes and streams. Rumford is known for its vast array of winter sports activities such as snowmobiling, cross-country and alpine skiing and ice fishing and sledding. The Black Mountain Ski Center is host to many regional competitions and international ski events, as well as being a great family ski center. As part of the River Valley Community, Rumford also offers hiking, biking, picnicking, camping or canoeing and kayaking, fishing and boating on the clear blue lakes and rivers of the region. Hosmer Field and Rumford Park are great places to take a hike or skate and play hockey on one of two rinks. Other places of interest near Rumford include Andover Falls and Angel Falls. The Appalachian Trail can be accessed in three areas: Grafton Notch State Park, or off the South Arm Road in Andover and also from East B Hill Road, which is 8 miles from the intersection in Andover. Check with the rangers or South Arm Campground for exact location of trail access.

The Sunday River area of Maine, near the towns of Bethel and Norway Lakes, is situated in the western part of the state north of Portland. This area enjoys four distinct seasons, with cold, snowy winters. January temperatures generally range from 11 to 31 degrees F., and single digits at night are common. Below zero temperatures are a possibility, but usually do not stick around for long. Temperatures start to warm up in March, but snow is still possible into early April. Generally, summers are mild with a greater range of temperatures the further inland you travel.
