Weld is a small town in the northwestern mountains region of Maine, most well known for being the home of Mount Blue State Park. The State Park has been called "one of the best kept secrets of Maine," because although it's not as well known as some of the other state parks in Maine, it has some of the best mountain climbing and hiking in the state. Mount Blue includes Webb Lake, which has sand beaches for swimming and a bathhouse, hot showers, a boat launch, a nature center and an amphitheater. Panning for gold in the Swift River is also available and one of the more unique things to do in the park. The Mount Blue State Park Campground has over 180 wooded sites for tent camping (but no hook-ups.) The nearby Center Hill Area provides picnicking, a nature trail and a multiple use day trail open to ATVs, horses, hikers, and mountain bikes. During the summer months, a naturalist leads scheduled hikes and other programs at Center Hill. In the wintertime, the park contains cross-country ski trails, an ice rink and a major snowmobile trail. The village of Weld has local shops and markets, a post office and restaurants. More shopping and services can be found in the nearby town of Farmington.

Weld Weather & Climate

Northwestern Maine near the New Hampshire state line enjoys four distinct seasons typical of the New England climate. Mild to warm days with cool evenings, and occasional showers and thunderstorms can be expected in summer. It rarely becomes hot and humid enough to be considered uncomfortable. Fall is spectacular - crisp, cool days and cold nights, and often the most number of sunny days during the year. Winter begins around Thanksgiving, or sometimes even earlier in the month, and January and February are generally the coldest months. The average annual snowfall is around 85-100 inches. Most snowfall occurs in eight to ten measurable storms of 6 inches to a foot. True winter blizzards are rare in Maine, although some winter storms are accompanied by high winds. Temperatures begin to increase in March, along with an increase in humidity, which often results in snowstorms or thunderstorms, depending on the temperature.
