Bernard
is located in 'Downeast Maine," on the southwestern part of Mount Desert Island, which is often referred to as the quiet or back side of the island because it is on the opposite side from the more well known town of Bar Harbor. Bernard has all the charm and character of a historic fishing village, however, along with neighboring Bass Harbor, both are communities that are not actually separate towns, but a part of the larger municipality of Tremont. Mount Desert Island is internationally known as home to Acadia National Park, the first National Park established east of the Mississippi. The park covers 47,000 acres of coastline and mountains, woodlands, lakes and streams. Breathtaking scenery ranges from granite cliffs that plunge into the sea to pretty cobblestone beaches. More than 120 miles of hiking and nature trails are on the island, and other activities include sightseeing ferry excursions, whale watching, sailing, boating and fishing, kayaking, biking, antiquing, and shopping in art galleries and specialty shops and dining on fresh crabs and lobster. As a part of Mount Desert Island, Bernard offers visitors all of the attractions and scenic beauty of the national park and island, with a serene, relaxing atmosphere in which to retire at night.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
