Acadia
has the distinction of being the first National Park established east of the Mississippi. This incredibly beautiful region in "Down East Maine" is located on the rocky shore of Mount Desert Island. It covers over 47,000 acres of coastline, mountains, woodlands, lakes and streams. The scenery is breathtaking with cobblestone beaches and granite cliffs that rise from the sea, dense green forests and picturesque fishing villages. Acadia is full of activities spring through fall, including 150 miles of hiking trails, biking, canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, fishing, whale watching and camping. It's also popular with photographers and artists who like to capture its stunning natural beauty on film or canvas. Park rangers at Acadia give guided walks, talks, and cruises and slide programs on various topics from late May to October. The town of Bar Harbor is the most well known community on Mount Desert Island and has a delightful shopping district, restaurants, outdoor festivals and entertainment. If you tire of exploring the coastline, visit nearby Ellsworth, which is the hub of most of the cultural activities in the area. Spend a day visiting the art galleries and museums, followed by a relaxing, delicious dinner of fresh crabs and lobster. The choices are endless in Acadia. It's no wonder visitors come from all over the world to enjoy its' unique coastal beauty and charm.

Southeast Maine , along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a distinct four-season climate. This area, often referred to as "Downeast Maine," includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Visitors are advised to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions in this part of Maine because the climate is highly changeable. Temperatures in summer can range as much as 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter fog or rain at any time. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. This moisture occurs in every form at Acadia National Park. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches.
