Southwest Harbor
Maine, is located on Mount Desert Island at the southwestern entrance to Somes Sound, the only natural fjord on the east coast of the United States. It is often referred to as the quiet side of the island because it has a slower pace and is an easy distance from the more tourist oriented town of Bar Harbor, which is located on the northeast side of the island. Southwest Harbor has a population of approximately 1,900 and has a great mix of shops, galleries and fine eateries that feature fresh lobsters right off the boat. With its’ location on Mount Desert Island which encompasses Acadia National Park, Southwest Harbor enjoys spectacular coastal scenery and a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. Access to the nearby offshore islands by boat can also be found in Southwest Harbor. The town’s growth and development has always been closely linked with the sea, and Southwest Harbor is home to some great yacht builders known for their excellent workmanship. Another place of interest is the Wendell Gilley Museum of Bird Carving, which features the fine work of world famous artist Wendell Gilley. Southwest Harbor typifies the romantic image of New England seafaring coastal towns that consistently attracts visitors to Mount Desert Island year after year.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
