Mount-Desert-Island
is located in "Downeast Maine," home to Acadia National Park and the tourist town of Bar Harbor. The island is a geological wonder carved by a giant glacier that, when it melted, left mountains, lakes, woodlands and streams, and the 7-mile long Somes Sound - the only fjord on the East Coast of the U.S. There are only four official townships on the Mount Desert Island - Bar Harbor, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor and Tremont. Bar Harbor is the most well known community, a charming town with quaint shops and restaurants, outdoor festivals, an Oceanarium and Natural History Museum. Visitors from all over flock to this romantic seaside village to enjoy the natural beauty and variety of activities. Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island offers exciting activities such as sea kayaking, whale watching, deep-sea fishing, canoeing, sailing and special sea cruises. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the dry land, there is beachcombing, hiking, biking, rock climbing and golf. The scenery with its' cobblestone beaches, granite cliffs that rise from the sea and picturesque fishing villages also makes it an ideal vacation spot for photographers and artists. In addition, winter is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year on Mount Desert Island, and offers snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and ice skating and carriage rides along picturesque groomed trails. Points of interest in the area include the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Sand Beach, Cadillac Mountain and the Park Loop Road.

Southeast Maine , along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a distinct four-season climate. This area, often referred to as "Downeast Maine," includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. Visitors are advised to come prepared for a variety of weather conditions in this part of Maine because the climate is highly changeable. Temperatures in summer can range as much as 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter fog or rain at any time. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. This moisture occurs in every form at Acadia National Park. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches.
