Swans-Island
is located off Mount Desert Island and belongs to a group of islands known as the Burntcoat Group. The Hockamock Head Lighthouse marks the entrance to Burntcoat Harbor on Swans Island. There are three settlements on the island; Atlantic, which is near the ferry landing, Minturn, on the southern coast of the island, and Swans Island Village, also located on the southern coast across from Minturn. Historic Swans Island is named for patriot James Swan, who bought the group of islands in 1784. There is a museum on the island that has exhibits and photographs of the early life and history of Swans Island. Today approximately 350 people live here year-round, including many that are lobster fishermen. This isn't a place to come if you're looking for a lot of shopping or nightlife - but rather it's a place of natural beauty and tranquility, with no shopping malls or movie theaters. Biking is good way to explore the beauty of the island, with many trails along Burntcoat Harbor, the white sand beaches and rocky shoreline, through pine woods and out to the lighthouse where you can stop for an afternoon picnic. The island also has good hiking trails, such as the one to Irish Point, and Goose Pond Mountain or Big Mountain where you'll be treated to a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. Swimming, kayaking and canoeing are also available. To reach Swans Island, take the 35-minute ferry ride from Bass Harbor, which is located on the southwest part of Mt. Desert Island.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
