Bass Harbor
is a small fishing village located on the quiet south side of Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park. This quaint seaside community is actually a “village within a town” with both Bass Island and neighboring Bernard being a part of the municipality of the city of Tremont. But, make no mistake, Bass Island is unique unto itself, with winding roads, picture postcard homes and buildings, and its beautiful harbor filled with sailboats and lobster boats and traps. You’ll find many photographic opportunities here, including nearby Bass Island Lighthouse. The town of Bar Harbor with all its shopping, entertainment and fine seafood restaurants is just a short drive away. Bass Island is the kind of place that’s perfect for daydreaming and to kick back and unwind with a good book or magazine. But for those who are seeking a little more action, there are all of the outdoor recreation opportunities of nearby Acadia National Park. Just a sample of things to do include swimming, boating, kayaking and canoeing, hiking, hang gliding, golf, whale watching and nature walks. Local bus tours of the island are available, and ferries regularly leave Bass Island for the outer islands and Nova Scotia.

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
