Bangor
is the largest city in the lower Penobscot Valley region, located on the banks of the Penobscot River near the Atlantic Ocean. It is part of what is considered "The Bangor Region," which encompasses the area between the rugged coastline of Downeast Maine and the spectacular North Woods of Maine. With a population of just 35,000, Bangor offers all of the amenities of a city, while enjoying the charm and peace of mind of a small town. It's the commercial and cultural hub for the region, and has an excellent network of highways, giving it easy access to other parts of the state. Fishing is a year-round sport in Bangor, and in years past, the first Atlantic salmon caught in the Penobscot River has been given to the President of the United States. Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, white water rafting, hiking and biking are all popular activities in Bangor, and given the climate of the area, it's not surprising that winter sports are a top draw, as well. In addition, Bangor boasts several challenging golf courses and tennis courts. Camping in the wilderness or at one of the many campgrounds in the area offers great family fun opportunities and a chance to experience the area's pristine lakes, rivers and timbered forests. Free outdoor concerts are held every Thursday evening on the waterfront in Bangor in June and July. Easy day trips include the Bar Harbor region and the Katahdin Area of Maine.
