Orono
is home to the University of Maine, and has a thriving downtown district, as well as lots of outdoor recreation to offer visitors. This small town of 10,000 (including students) is located just north of Bangor on the banks of the Penobscot River, near Davis and Chemo ponds. Orono has over 200 acres of greenspace within the city limits with trails for hiking, jogging, biking and cross-country skiing. Nearby Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers offer fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking opportunities. There are public tennis, basketball and ice skating facilities, and the Penobscot Valley Country Club has a challenging and beautiful 18-hole golf course. The University offers cultural events and entertainment at the Maine Center for the Arts, shows at the Planetarium, as well as many art shows and exhibits. The Hudson Museum, located in the Maine Center for the Arts, has one of the best Prehispanic Mexican and Central American displays in the United States. The museum features several traveling exhibits yearly, and contains over 8000 archaeological artifacts, including Precolumbian ceramics, lithics and gold and artifacts from Central America. Orono is an ideal base for those interested in the Bangor area, and it is just one hour to the Bar Harbor area and the North Maine Woods.

Maine enjoys four distinct seasons. In the Penobscot Valley region, near the city of Bangor, there is plenty of clear, sunny weather in summer, with nights cool enough to provide a welcome relief from the warm days. Brisk, sunny days and cool nights in September prepare for what is the favorite season for many in Maine %u2013 the spectacular colors of fall. Temperatures continue to cool through October and November, with wintry weather returning around Thanksgiving. Cold weather settles in around the Penobscot Valley around Thanksgiving. January and February are generally the heart of winter. Below zero temperatures are possible, but infrequent and usually do not last for any long period of time. Temperatures begin to increase in March, with a corresponding increase in humidity. The Bangor area receives approximately 85 inches of snow a year, most of it occurring in eight to ten measurable storms per year.
