Orland
is a peaceful, mid-size town nestled in the hills on the east side of the Penobscot River overlooking the Narramissic River and Alamoosook Lake. It is a quintessential New England village, complete with a General Store and a white steepled church. In fact, the village is one of the most photographed areas in Maine. The town of Orland is unique in that it enjoys the advantages of a quiet inland lake town, with easy access to the splendor of the Penobscot Bay. Situated in the heart of Downeast Maine, Orland is an easy day trip to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Alamoosook Lake’s peaceful habitat is home to a diverse wildlife population including loons, eagles, ospreys, deer, otter, beaver and even a passing black bear. In addition to wildlife viewing, Alamoosook Lake has great fishing for bass, trout, pickerel and salmon, along with canoeing, kayaking, swimming and just relaxing by the water’s edge. In winter months, sports such as ice fishing, cross-country skiing and ice-skating are available. Other attractions in the Orland area include the Craig Brook Fish Hatchery, the oldest hatchery on the East Coast open for tours, and Great Pond Mountain’s hiking trails. In late June, the town celebrates Orland River Day on the Narramissic River in historic downtown Orland.
