Lucerne-In-Maine is a resort village that is located in the center of the town of Dedham in the Downeast region of Maine. It is approximately 20 minutes to Bangor and a half-hour to the Bar Harbor region. Lucerne-in-Maine has a very interesting history. The Lucerne Inn and the 5,000 acres surrounding it was meant to be one of the nation’s first planned communities in the 1920s – a “developer’s dream.” The village of Lucerne was created as a municipality by the Maine Legislature in 1927, and was pitched as “one of the most beautiful spots in America.” However, due to the financial troubles of the 1930s, the idea for the planned community never panned out, but the municipal portion of Lucerne-in-Maine survived. Today, the landmark community offers spectacular views from a classic Donald Ross designed 9-hole golf course, as well as beautifully cultivated grounds and a great view of Phillips Lake. As part of the town of Dedham, Lucerne-in-Maine is located on an old stage route that ran from Bangor to Ellsworth, presently known as Route 1A. It is situated within a group of wooded mountains (with Bald Mountain the highest at 1,261 feet above sea level) and known as the “Switzerland of America.” All types of recreational activities are available in the area, including swimming, fishing, wildlife viewing (loons, dear, moose, eagles and ducks,) hiking, ice fishing, snowmobiling and skiing. All seasons all beautiful in Lucerne-in-Maine, but especially in fall with the multi-colored hues of the season.
