Waterboro is a small historic town on the southwest coast that was first settled by Captain John Smith in 1768. Today the town has about 7,000 residents and covers about 53 square miles. Attractions in town include Lake Sherburne the Little Ossipee Lake and Ossipee Mountain, on top of which is a fire tower that is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. The town of Waterboro is only a half-hour’s drive to Old Orchard Beach, Maine’s most well known seaside amusement park and home to the state’s largest waterslide and only wooden roller coaster. Other activities in the Waterboro area include swimming, boating, fishing, sea kayaking, sightseeing cruises, hiking, biking and golf. Outlet shopping in the town of Freeport is about an hour from Waterboro, and the “Twin Cities” of Saco and Biddeford are approximately 15 miles away. Downeast Magazine called Saco a “hidden gem” and gave the city rave reviews for its’ revitalized downtown area and small town character. Ferry Beach State Park is located in Saco and features miles of white sand beach, nature trails, guided nature tours and beautiful picnic areas. Other nearby points of interest include the Biddeford Pool & Wood Island Lighthouse, Fortunes Rocks Beach and the Kennebunkport Dock Square.

The western foothills mountain region of Maine, near the New Hampshire border has four very distinct seasons. Although influenced by the ocean, which is approximately one hour south, it does not have the heavy fogs of the seaside towns. Summers are comfortable and hot humid weather is rare. Winters are cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Single digit temperatures are common and readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter. Rainfall is distributed very evenly throughout the year, and snow accumulation is generally on the ground from December through March. Mid%u2013May is the average occurrence of the last freeze in spring, and the average occurrence of the first freeze in fall is late September. Fall is often the sunniest and most pleasant of the seasons.
