Shapleigh is a small town located in York County, southwestern Maine along Highway 11 north of the town of Sanford. Although not as well known as some of the other York County towns such as Kennebunkport, Lake Arrowhead and Old Orchard Beach, Shapleigh nevertheless enjoys all the same amenities and outdoor recreational possibilities without all the crowds. This is typical small town New England, peaceful, serene and with a high quality of life. Shapleigh is located on Mousam Lake near the New Hampshire border. This narrow 900-acre lake is popular for brook, brown and lake trout fishing, as well as canoeing and swimming. Easy day trips take you to the beach activities of Kennebunk Beach and the Coney Island-style amusement park at Old Orchard Beach, featuring the state's only old wooden roller coaster ride. Small fishing villages abound in the area and offer everything from hiking and biking, to deep-sea fishing and whale watching excursions. Shapleigh is just 45 minutes to Kennebunkport, one hour from the culturally diverse cities of Portland, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire and just two hours from Boston. With its' convenient location, it makes a quiet place to base a vacation, far enough away for seclusion, yet near enough not to miss anything.

The western foothills mountain region of Maine, near the New Hampshire border has four very distinct seasons. Although influenced by the ocean, which is approximately one hour south, it does not have the heavy fogs of the seaside towns. Summers are comfortable and hot humid weather is rare. Winters are cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Single digit temperatures are common and readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter. Rainfall is distributed very evenly throughout the year, and snow accumulation is generally on the ground from December through March. Mid-May is the average occurrence of the last freeze in spring, and the average occurrence of the first freeze in fall is late September. Fall is often the sunniest and most pleasant of the seasons.
