Waldoboro
is a small town of approximately 5,000, just off Highway 1 along Maine’s central coast. This town has a proud shipbuilding past and its Main Street is lined with old houses and buildings that represent several architectural styles, including Cape Cod, Queen Anne and Greek Revival. Things to see in Waldoboro include the Historical Society Museum which comprises the Boggs one-room schoolhouse built in 1857; the Town Pound built in 1819 and a barn and museum filled with artifacts, antiques, old clothing, tools, toys and housewares. Also of historical interest is one of the three oldest churches in Maine, the “Old German Church,” built in 1772. It was originally on the east side of the Medomak River, but moved to its present site in 1794. Waldoboro is near all the central coast attractions, such as Boothbay Harbor, Camden Hills State Park and Pemaquid Point. Outdoors recreation near Waldoboro includes hiking, fishing, swimming, golf, horseback riding, whale watching excursions, ferry rides to islands and much more. The Waldoboro Theater on Main Street is a beautiful Greek-Revival style building with an Art Deco interior with concerts, plays and lectures performed throughout the year.

The southern coast of Maine near the Penobscot Bay has very comfortable summers and falls, cold winters with frequent thaws and late, changeable springs. Summers are mild to cool by most people%u2019s standards, with very few summer nights too warm and humid for sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days along the coast and is perfect for fall sightseeing. Winters are cold, but not as severe as the northeastern part of the state along the Canadian border. The White Mountains, to the northwest, keep considerable snow from reaching the Portland area and also help moderate the temperature. Normal precipitation is remarkably uniform throughout the year. Winds are generally light with the strongest being in the months of March and November. Temperatures well below freezing are reported each year, and cold waves sometimes come along with strong winds. Blizzards are possible but infrequent in Maine.
