Poland Spring is a small town with a very interesting history, located in the western mountains region of Maine. This quaint town is known for being the home to the Poland Spring Resort, called “The Most Beautiful Resort in the World.” It began in 1845 when the Ricker family first started bottling the clean, fresh spring water found in the area, and eventually built a large, two-story gable roofed house to be used as a stagecoach stop. The inn grew until eventually it contained 300 rooms in all, including a huge music room, and many card and recreation rooms. The grand hotel became so famous that rooms in it were sold out for years in advance to some of the wealthiest celebrities and barons in America. Today, the Poland Spring Preservation Park contains the Mansion House, the Maine State Building, All Soul’s Chapel, and the Historic Poland Spring Water Plant. All are open to the public and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Poland Spring is also near Range Ponds State Park, which offers 750 acres for swimming, boating and fishing, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and picnicking. Nearby Tripp Lake is a two-mile long lake that is also great for swimming, fishing and boating, and the Shawnee Peak ski area is just about 20 minutes away from Poland Spring.

The Kennebec Valley region of southwestern Maine near the cities of Augusta and the sister cities of Lewiston and Auburn has four distinct seasons. Located approximately one hour from the seacoast and along the Kennebec River, the area is considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. It is also far enough south that it is without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. The summer is comfortable, with perhaps a few days that reach as high as 90 degrees. Uncomfortably hot and humid weather is rare. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
