Poland
is located along Highway 26 in the lower western mountain region of Maine, near the city of Lewiston. The small town of Poland is most well known for being the home of Range Ponds State Park. The park offers 750 acres for swimming, fishing, boating, hiking and picnicking. Visitors love the park’s wide, sandy beach, and most activity centers around the waterfront and the smooth surfaced promenade that parallels the pond for 1000 feet next to the beach. A public boat launch is located at the end of the beach, and boating, canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing are all available on the pond. There are hiking trails in the park and on old logging roads and railroad beds. The park also features picnic areas with grills, a playground for children, a ballfield and a swimming area with lifeguards. Poland is just a short drive to the historical “twin cities” of Lewiston and Auburn. There you will find everything from fast food to fine restaurants featuring Maine lobster, antiques and specialty shops and art galleries and entertainment. Lewiston is also home to the Great Falls Balloon Festival, usually held in August. Poland is a perfect choice for experiencing all the western mountain region of Maine has to offer, near the convenience of the larger cities, but away from the crowds and noise.

The Kennebec Valley region of southwestern Maine near the cities of Augusta and the sister cities of Lewiston and Auburn has four distinct seasons. Located approximately one hour from the seacoast and along the Kennebec River, the area is considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. It is also far enough south that it is without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. The summer is comfortable, with perhaps a few days that reach as high as 90 degrees. Uncomfortably hot and humid weather is rare. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
