Monmouth
is located southwest of Augusta between Augusta and Lewiston and near Lake Cobbossee. Activities in the area include swimming, boating, fishing, canoeing, golf, hiking and camping. In wintertime, there are miles and miles of trails for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Lake Cobbossee, which is near the town of Monmouth, is home to one of the most recognized lighthouses on the east coast and is the only fresh water land-locked lighthouse in the state of Maine. Other points of interest include the Monmouth Museum, a five-building museum complex that provides visitors with a look at life in 19th century rural Maine. There is a carriage house, freight shed, blacksmith shop and a variety of other historical displays in the museum, and the highlight of the museum is the five-room Blossom House, built in the late 1700s. The nearby towns of Lewiston and Auburn have quaint gift and antique shops worth exploring, as well as fine restaurants and museums. Lewiston is also home to several festivals throughout the year including the colorful Festival de Joie and the Great Falls Balloon Festival.

The Kennebec Valley region of southwestern Maine near the cities of Augusta and the sister cities of Lewiston and Auburn has four distinct seasons. Located approximately one hour from the seacoast and along the Kennebec River, the area is considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. It is also far enough south that it is without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. The summer is comfortable, with perhaps a few days that reach as high as 90 degrees. Uncomfortably hot and humid weather is rare. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
