Litchfield
is a small town of approximately 3,000 located in Kennebec County, just south of Augusta, Maine’s capital city, in the central part of the state. As a vacation destination, Litchfield lies on the shores of Lake Cobbosseecontee, also known as Lake Cobbossee, which is part of the Tacoma Lakes resort area. The Tacoma Lakes are actually a group of five lakes linked together, with clean, clear water and some of the best fishing around for bass, perch and brown trout. The Abenaki Indians fished in the lake long before European settlers came, and the name “Cobbosseecontee” has been translated to mean “land of bountiful peace.” This describes the serenity and relaxation visitors feel when they visit the region, which was a favorite summer place for the affluent from Boston and New York during the late 1800s. There are activities for the whole family such as swimming, water skiing, canoeing, paddle boating, hiking and golf. Winter is just as active with ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and nearby downhill skiing. The Ladies Delight Lighthouse is a well loved landmark of the area, and Maine’s only lighthouse on a fresh water lake. Litchfield is only 30 minutes from Augusta, 50 minutes from Old Orchard Beach, and about two hours from Boston.

The Kennebec Valley region of southwestern Maine near the cities of Augusta and the sister cities of Lewiston and Auburn has four distinct seasons. Located approximately one hour from the seacoast and along the Kennebec River, the area is considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. It is also far enough south that it is without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. The summer is comfortable, with perhaps a few days that reach as high as 90 degrees. Uncomfortably hot and humid weather is rare. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
