Dexter
is situated in a small valley along Route 7 beside Lake Wassookeag in Central Maine. This area known as the Maine Highlands is centrally located approximately 40 miles from the coast and 40 miles to Moosehead Lake and Squaw Mountain. With a current population of around 5,000 residents, Dexter was settled in 1801 and incorporated in 1816. A gristmill was constructed on the falls along the river in 1818 and today the Dexter Historical Society uses the building, which replaced the original in 1854, as part of its museum complex. The town of Dexter offers an appealing small town ambiance centered on the 1,170-acre Lake Wassookeag, which provides a variety of recreational opportunities. Fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and snowmobiling are all popular activities, and the town has a 9-hole municipal golf course, a driving range, and a public beach and picnic area. Dexter also boasts one of the state’s best small municipal regional airports, which offers 3,000 feet of lighted paved runway. Historical sites and museums in town include the Abbott Museum (1836,) the Grist Mill Museum (1854,) Miller’s House (1825) and the Carr Schoolhouse, built in 1845.
