Newport has long been considered the “Gateway to the Moosehead Region” in the Sebasticook Valley region of Maine. Located in Penobscot County at the intersection of all the area’s major highways, Newport is a very pretty town that is easily accessible for travelers. It’s also home to beautiful Sebasticook Lake - over 4,000 acres of the lake are included within the confines of the town. The lake provides many recreational activities including swimming, boating and fishing, and in winter, snowmobiling and dog sled racing are popular. It is also considered a prime area for birdwatching. The town of Newport offers convenient services and amenities for visitors, with a vibrant downtown, unique shops and restaurants and an interesting historical society museum. The entire watershed area of Sebasticook Lake is a growing, prosperous region that makes a lovely vacation spot, or an attractive place to live and work. One note of historical interest – in 1992, an 1,800 year old fish weir was discovered in the shallows of the Sebasticook Lake, confirming that this was a popular gathering place for pre-historic travelers as well.
