Casco-Bay
is along the southern coast of Maine near the mouth of the Kennebec River. It extends a total distance of twenty miles across and is filled with over 300 small islands. The city of Portland is at the western end of the Bay and Casco Bay is considered part of the Greater Portland area. Always prized for its natural beauty, Casco Bay is also a modern seaport with a long history of international commerce. In the Casco Bay region, you can visit the coastal villages of Cape Elizabeth and Freeport, or experience Portland's Old Port area of cobblestone streets, boutiques, art galleries, coffeehouses and seafood. Two Lights State Park is off Route 77 in Cape Elizabeth and has a spectacular view of Casco Bay. The park originally served as a World War II defense station, and some historical remnants of that remain today. There are picnic tables and grills that overlook the sea and crashing surf below. Crescent Beach State Park is only a half-mile away from Two Lights and it offers swimming and sunbathing at one of Maine's most beautiful beaches. There are also picnic tables, a children's playground and a snack bar. Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park runs along the shores of Casco Bay and the Harraseeket River. There are five miles of hiking trails along the shores and through the woods, picnicking and wildlife watching on more than 200 acres of forest and shoreline. The Casco Bay area is unique in that it combines the culture, shopping and restaurants of Portland with the recreation and peacefulness of the smaller coastal villages.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
