Long Island
is one of the best known islands of Casco Bay, located just five miles off the coast of Portland, and blessed with spectacular white sand beaches set against granite cliffs. Long Island is also the name of the small village that includes Vaill Island and several other smaller islands. Part of Cumberland County, the town of Long Island was incorporated in 1992 and was once a part of the city of Portland. It has since become a popular resort island with tourists, known for its’ excellent fishing. Long Island is also a year round fishing and farming community that offers quaint county fairs, sailing races, hiking trails, a large spruce and fir forest and one of the largest meadow ecosystems on any Maine island. It is easily accessibly by ferry from the mainland and makes a peaceful, relaxing base for a vacation. Other nearby attractions include the Old Port Exchange along the waterfront in Portland, outlet stores shopping, the Portland Art Museum and Wyeth Collection, the Children’s Museum of Maine, various fishing charters, historic lighthouses, amusement parks and waterparks.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
