York
is a city on the southern coast of Maine near the New Hampshire border. Actually comprised of 66 square miles and four communities; York contains York Beach, York Harbor, York Village (or "Old York,") and Cape Neddick. Together they are often referred to as "The Yorks." This historic area is most well known for its beautiful beaches, but also retains some of the best preserved and most authentic historic buildings in the state. Cape Neddick is the residential suburb of York and was the last section of area to be developed. York is an ideal vacation spot - it has miles of sandy beaches, a historic lighthouse, a museum that includes the oldest jail in America, Maine's largest zoo and an amusement park in the center of York Beach. Activities abound in the area, swimming, boating, fishing, sea kayaking, hiking, biking and golf. There are also several family oriented festivals in York year round, including a Harvestfest in October and York Days, which is a week long celebration of summer on York Beach. York Village has many 18th and 19th century buildings, clustered along York Street and Lindsay Road that are open for public tours. You will also find wonderful seafood restaurants in The Yorks, plenty of shopping, cozy bed & breakfasts and luxury oceanfront resorts. Money Magazine rated The Yorks as "one of the top ten places to vacation in the U.S."

The southwestern tip of Maine, just across the New Hampshire state line, enjoys a four-season climate without the frigid temperatures of the northeastern part of the state. While the weather can change quickly in Maine (from sunny to stormy,) the seasons are pretty predictable. Fall is a favorite time of the year for many, with mild sunny days and crisp cool nights. With its proximity to the ocean, this part of Maine enjoys mild summers with cool ocean breezes and temperatures that rarely go over 80 degrees. Rain is possible anytime of the year. Visitors should come prepared for anything - temperatures in Maine have been known to swing 20 degrees in less than an hour. At times, the wind along the coast picks up, making it seem even cooler.
