Westport-Island
was incorporated as an island community in 1828, and is located in the Bath/Boothbay Harbor region on the midcoast of Maine. The island is about twelve miles long and two miles wide and connected to the mainland by a bridge. It was originally known as Jeremysquam Island and was purchased from the Sagamore Indians by John Richards in 1649. If you want to feel as if you've stepped back in time and experience quintessential Maine, look no further than Westport Island. The island is surrounded by a rocky shoreline that looks out over the other islands of Sheepscot Bay, where harbor seals sun themselves on the rocks and lobster boats make their way towards the Hendriks Head Lighthouse and beyond. Attractions on the island include Doggett's Castle, located on the western bank of the Sheepscot River and where Captain Samuel Doggett moored his ship, The Dolphin, while trading with the Indians. The Decker family built the Marie Antoinette House on Westport in the early 1800s and legend has it that the home was originally being prepared as a home for Queen Marie Antoinette. Westport Island is in the heart of all the mid coast attractions; visit the seafaring town of Wiscasset, known for its' many antique shops, enjoy boat trips, whale watching excursions and lighthouse excursions, deep sea fishing and an ocean aquarium at Boothbay Harbor. Visit the Reid State Park Beach in Georgetown and the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath - the list of attractions is endless.

Westport Island Weather & Climate

The Kennebec and Damariscotta River region, located along mid-coast Maine, has a moderate climate that is greatly influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. This area has an elevation of 70 feet above sea level and is surrounded by rolling farmlands, forest areas, numerous islands, peninsulas, bays and beaches. Winter temperatures generally range from 0 to 40 degrees F. and summer from 50 to 85 degrees F. Nights are usually chilly, even in the middle of summer. Average rainfall totals 40 inches, with snowfall totaling 75 inches. Ice storms can occur in winter and early spring, but ice and snow tends to melt quickly along the coast. Rain can occur in any month of the year, and thunderstorms are possible in the summertime. Crisp, sunny days and cool nights make fall one of the most pleasant times of the year along the mid-coast.
