The-Forks is a four-season wilderness area, well known for its' white water rafting opportunities on the Kennebec, Penobscot and Dead Rivers and also for its' extensive network of snowmobile trails. The area is located in north central Maine approximately 94 miles from the Bangor Airport. The Forks area receives nearly ten feet of snow on average each year, and has over 110 miles of groomed trails, making it the number one spot for snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing. White water rafting is the number one sport in summertime, but the region also offers fishing for brook trout, salmon and bass, kayaking and canoeing, camping, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. A network of hiking trails surround Moxie Falls, which is one of Maine's highest waterfalls with a vertical drop of over 30 yards. Another exciting thing to do in The Forks area is taking a float plane trip, which is available on both the Kennebec and Dead Rivers. One of the most scenic times to visit is in autumn, which also has some of the best weather of the year and the hillsides are ablaze with the many shades of yellow, gold, red, purple and green. You will find many different kinds of restaurants in The Forks area, and lodging ranges from bed and breakfasts and motels to full service country inns and rental homes.

The Forks Weather & Climate

Northern Maine enjoys four distinct seasons typical of the New England climate. Mild to warm days with cool evenings, and occasional showers and thunderstorms can be expected in summer. It rarely becomes hot and humid enough to be considered uncomfortable. Fall is spectacular - crisp, cool days and cold nights, and often the most number of sunny days during the year. Winter begins around Thanksgiving, or sometimes even earlier in the month, and January and February are generally the coldest months. The average annual snowfall is around 85-100 inches. Most snowfall occurs in eight to ten measurable storms of 6 inches to a foot. True winter blizzards are rare in Maine, although some winter storms are accompanied by high winds. Temperatures begin to increase in March, along with an increase in humidity, which often results in snowstorms or thunderstorms, depending on the temperature.
