Sugarloaf is located in the Carrabassett Valley in the western mountain region of Maine. Abundant snow, one huge mountain and the only above-tree line skiing on the East Coast have made Sugarloaf Ski Resort one of Maine’s best known attractions. Downhill skiing is superb with a vertical drop of 2,820 feet, taller than any other New England ski peak except for Killington in the state of Vermont. Sugarloaf has more than 45 miles of trails, ranging from novice to expert-skiers only. Children’s ski programs begin at age three. Three of the ski trails are more than three miles long. The mountain has three terrain parks and a halfpipe. There are two high-speed quad, two quad, one triple, and eight double chair lifts and one T-bar. Other activities at Sugarloaf include snowshoeing, sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating, and cross-country skiing at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center. The Sugarloaf base village has restaurants and shops, and a car is not needed once you reach the resort because a shuttle connects all of the mountain operations. Summertime is much quieter than winter, but hiking, biking, golf and fishing are all available. Hotels and condominiums, many with ski in, ski out access dot the mountainside. Sugarloaf is near the towns of Rangeley and Kingfield.
