Cumberland Center
is a small town in Western Maine that is considered a suburb of Portland. Located in Cumberland County, it has a population of approximately 7,100 residents. Once a part of North Yarmouth, Cumberland incorporated into its own town in 1821 and has a rich farming history – with many of the original working farms remaining in the area. Cumberland is home to the Cumberland Fair, one of the state’s largest and oldest agricultural fairs. Held annually in Cumberland since 1868, the fair always takes place the last week in September. For the past 18 years, Cumberland has also been host to the Annual Maine State Giant Pumpkin and Squash Contest. The lakes, streams and nearby coast offers dozens of outdoor recreational activities in the Cumberland area. Choose from hiking, cycling, fishing, boating, white water rafting, golf, skiing, camping and more. The outlet shops of the city of Freeport are nearby and Portland offers fine dining, museums and theater. In addition, the Old Port Waterfront area in Portland is filled with art galleries, crafts shops, eclectic boutiques, bookstores and restaurants.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
