Isle au Haut
is a small, picturesque island located on the eastern fringe of Penobscot Bay, about seven miles off the coast of Maine. Isle au Haut is not a typical vacation resort island – it is rather a working island and doesn’t offer a lot of amenities. About 60% of the island is part of Acadia National Park and the remainder is privately owned. No auto ferry is available to Isle au Haut. You will need to take the mailboat to reach the island, which departs from Stonington on Deer Isle. Note: the number of passengers the mailboat can carry regulates the number of visitors per day to Isle au Haut. Visitors are encouraged to use the mailboat as their only means of coming to the island. This helps prevent congestion and preserve the privacy and uncrowded nature of the island. To stay on Isle au Haut, you can either reserve a room at The Keeper’s House or The Inn at Isle au Haut – or reserve a campsite at Duck Harbor Campground in Acadia National Park. The five campsites at Duck Harbor include a lean-to shelter that holds up to six people, a fire ring, picnic table, pit toilet and access to a water pump. Reservations are required and these sites are usually booked far in advance. There are also some homes available for rent on Isle au Haut. Other things to do include hiking in the National Park. The trailheads are marked and maps are available at Duck Harbor and at the Ranger Station. You can hike to either the top of one of the mountains or to the southern coast of the island. The history and way of life on Isle au Haut is chronicled in a wonderful book by Charles Pratt called “Here on the Island.”

"Downeast Maine," along the Atlantic Seacoast, has a variable climate that can change quickly at any time. This area, which includes the Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island, has four distinct seasons where summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees F to 85 degrees F. Fog is quite common during the summer months, as well, but there is also plenty of sunshine. Spring and fall temperatures vary from 30 degrees F to 70 degrees F. You may also encounter rain in any month, and ice storms are regular in the winter and early spring. The Maine coastal climate is ranked second to only the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation. Average annual rainfall is 48 inches and average annual snowfall is 61 inches. Snow tends to melt quickly along the coast - more continuous snow can be found inland.
