Castine
sits on the tip of a peninsula in the East Penobscot Bay Region in "Downeast" Maine, approximately one hour from Bangor. This peaceful, historic village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and was fought over by the French, the British, the Dutch and the Americans from the 1600s to the War of 1812. There are more than 100 historic markers in town, making it excellent for walking tours. The town of Castine consists of two distinct areas referred to as "the Village," and "off neck," which is a narrow strip of land that separates the Bagaduce River from the Penobscot River. Points of interest in town are the lively harbor front, the town common area, two museums, Federal and Greek Revival homes, and the ruins of a British fort. Castine is also home to the Maine Maritime Academy. Visitors enjoy dining at one of several fine restaurants in town and along the waterfront where you can get anything from burgers to lobster. Castine is near the towns of Blue Hill and Camden, and has golf and tennis, swimming, fishing, sea kayaking, sailing and hiking opportunities. The town's population is only approximately 1300, but due to its popularity, that figure almost doubles in the summer months.

The Central Coast of Maine, near Penobscot Bay, has a mild climate with an average annual snowfall of 59 inches and average annual rainfall of 48 inches. Generally summers are mild with temperatures rarely going above 80 degrees. Expect cool weather on most summer nights, especially along the coast where sea breezes can feel quite cool. The humidity level is usually of no consequence due to the mild temperatures. Winters in Maine are cold but not frigid. Snow melts frequently along the coast - winter enthusiasts will find more snow on the ground for longer periods of time inland. Ice storms are regular in winter and early spring, and rain is frequent in every month. Fog is common during Jun, Jul and Aug.
