West Point
is a historic, scenic fishing village located on the Phippsburg Peninsula on Casco Bay along the midcoast of Maine. The town lies just 12 miles down the peninsula from the city of Bath. This beautiful area is where the colonists first landed in 1607 and West Point is one of the oldest fishing villages in the state. It has been said that “lobster boats have been in Casco Bay as long as there’s been lobstering.” West Point is a quiet, charming area from which to explore the whole Phippsburg Peninsula. Popham Beach is located here, one of the longest sandy beaches in the state of Maine and a popular spot for picnicking, swimming, fishing and boating, kayaking and canoeing. Two other beaches are in the West Point area at Cat Cove and Totman Cove, and there is even a historic lighthouse at Pond Island (built in 1855,) located at the mouth of the Kennebec River. For day trips, visit the quaint city of Bath, home to the Maine Maritime Museum, and a historic downtown with ship captain’s homes and antique shops to explore. The cities of Freeport and Boothbay Harbor are also near West Point and are popular for their outlet shopping.

The Southwest Coast of Maine near Casco Bay has four seasons with mild summer temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. Interior areas experience a greater range of temperatures in the summer than low-lying coastal areas. Expect cool sea breezes, especially at night. Widely scattered thunderstorms, along with higher humidity levels, can occur along with patchy fog along the coast. Maine%u2019s coastal climate is ranked second to the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation, and this moisture occurs in every from %u2013 from rain to ice and snow. Winters in Maine are quite cold with temperatures ranging from 11 to 31 degrees F. Average annual snowfall is 61 inches although snow melts more quickly along the coast than further inland.
