South China
is part of the China Lake region that includes the villages of China, South China, Weeks Mills and Branch Mills. The region also contains three main bodies of water; China Lake, Three Mile Pond and Branch Pond. All are located in Kennebec County within a 54-square-mile area that has a total population of around 4,000. Rolling hills, picturesque farms and crystal clear lakes and streams surround the small towns and villages of Kennebec County. It’s a convenient area of the state in which to base a vacation, situated about halfway between the coast and the capital city of Augusta. Of the three main bodies of water in the South China area, China Lake is the largest with 3,832 acres and a maximum depth of 85 feet. It’s well known for its’ salmon fishing, and also has small mouth bass and white perch. Other outdoor sports in the area include swimming, boating, hiking, biking and golf. An interesting landmark in South China is the “Indian Heart Rock,”or “Sacred Heart” as locals sometimes call it. The heart is carved at the base of a boulder that lies on the shore of the lake in South China. Legend has it that an Indian carved it into the stone after a thunderstorm destroyed the original paper heart that was used for the tribe’s religious devotions. Penobscot Bay, which has been rated as one of the top ten sailing bays in the world, is just minutes from South China and the China Lakes Region.

The south-central portion of Maine, just north of Augusta, has four delightful seasons with spectacular foliage in the autumn months. The overall climate is moderate with summer daytime temperatures in the 70s and low 80s, and cool nights. Winters are cold but usually not frigid. Spring and autumn are mild during the day, with crisp, cool nights. The really cold weather begins arriving around the end of November with January and February generally having the lowest temperatures. Below zero temperatures are possible, but not the norm. Accumulating snow is a possibility into March and early April, but the warmer days of spring generally means it melts fast. Rain can occur anytime of the year.
