Phippsburg
is located in the heart of one of the most popular vacation resort areas of the state, the Boothbay Harbor/Bath area on the midcoast of Maine. This historical little town is the site of the very first attempted English settlement on the northeast coast (in 1607,) although the town of Phippsburg itself was not incorporated until 1814. The village sits on a peninsula that juts into the water, and is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 1. It lies between the Kennebec River and Casco Bay, surrounded by quaint fishing villages, steep cliffs that rise from the sea, broad beaches, sparkling rivers and unspoiled countryside. Popham Beach, located on the tip of the Phippsburg peninsula, is one of the longest sandy beaches in Maine. Popham Beach State Park is a popular spot for locals and visitors, and contains picnic tables and charcoal pits, freshwater showers and a bathhouse. At the mouth of the Kennebec River lies Pond Island, a ten-acre island with a lighthouse that was built in 1855 (that replaced an earlier one built in 1821.) The lighthouse is not open to the public, but several boat cruises are available that offer close up looks at the island and lighthouse. Other things to do in Phippsburg include hiking, biking, golf, fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. Two historical sites in the area include Fort Popham, built on the banks of the Kennebec River during the Civil War, and Fort Baldwin, built during World War I atop nearby Sabino Hill.

The Southwest Coast of Maine near Casco Bay has four seasons with mild summer temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. Interior areas experience a greater range of temperatures in the summer than low-lying coastal areas. Expect cool sea breezes, especially at night. Widely scattered thunderstorms, along with higher humidity levels, can occur along with patchy fog along the coast. Maine%u2019s coastal climate is ranked second to the Pacific Northwest in annual precipitation, and this moisture occurs in every from %u2013 from rain to ice and snow. Winters in Maine are quite cold with temperatures ranging from 11 to 31 degrees F. Average annual snowfall is 61 inches although snow melts more quickly along the coast than further inland.
