Higgins Beach
is a wide, white sandy beach located off Route 77 near the historic town of Scarborough in southern Maine. The beach lies between rocky cliffs to the south and the Spurwink River to the north, has lots of sand dunes and good surf. It is considered by many to be the best swimming beach in the state and has a gentle slope that makes it safe for children. It’s also a favorite among surfers and sea kayakers, and is a nice beach for walking. Other activities on or nearby Higgins Beach include sailing, fishing, shelling, rafting, volleyball and golf. The nearby town of Scarborough is a picturesque seaside community, one of the oldest on the New England coast, dating to the middle 1600s. Just seven miles south of Higgins Beach is the city of Portland, with its’ museums, shopping and fine restaurants. Historic Old Orchard Beach Amusement Park is just a short drive south of town. Other attractions near Higgins Beach include the historic home of Winslow Homer in Prouts Neck, Portland Headlight, Two Lights State Park and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Portland area, along the southern seacoast, has very pleasant summers and falls, cold winters and changeable springs. Very few summer nights are too warm and humid for comfortable sleeping. Autumn has the greatest number of sunny days and the least cloudiness. Winters can often extend into normal springtime. Heavy seasonal snowfalls of over 100 inches occur about every 10 years. True blizzards are area in Maine. Although cold, temperatures in this part of Maine are generally not as frigid as further north in the state. Cold waves sometimes are accompanied by strong winds, but extremely cold temperatures are usually accompanied by light winds. Fog along the coast is sometimes a factor in the weather during the summer months of June, July and August.
