Caribou is known as "The Most Northeastern City in the United States." It is located in Aroostook County in the northeastern section of Maine. Incorporated in 1859 as the town of Lyndon, the name was changed to Caribou in February of 1869, and then back to Lyndon in March of that same year. Finally, in 1877, Caribou was confirmed the towns official name and it incorporated as a city in 1967. Today, the population of Caribou is approximately 8,300 residents. Aroostook County offers unlimited recreational opportunities in its beautiful natural forests and wilderness areas. This is the place to come to really escape city life and enjoy the out of doors. Caribou is near Aroostook Countys impressive snowmobile system, and other activities include cross-country skiing, hiking, sledding, fishing, boating, camping and wildlife viewing. Its not at all uncommon to see moose and other wildlife roaming the area. Several beautiful, pristine lakes in the region are known for their salmon and trout fishing. Aroostook County has a strong French-Acadian heritage and there are several special events throughout the year to celebrate the history of the area, such as the Acadian Festival and the Potato Blossom Festival. Caribou is definitely a place for all seasons and a great place to get away from it all.

Caribou Weather & Climate

The Northeast Corner of the state of Maine borders the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec. Four distinct seasons are punctuated by sharp changes in the weather. Northern Maine has cold to frigid winters with over 150 inches of snow per year, making it one of the best regions in the state for skiing and snowmobiling. As the days grow longer in March, the snow begins to recede. However, snowstorms can still occur until mid-April, although it does not usually stay on the ground for long. Summers are delightful with mild to warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings. Autumn in northern Maine has glorious displays of fall foliage along with crisp, cool mornings, bright sunny days and cold nights. Rainfall is moderate and can occur anytime of the year, although summer is generally the rainy season. Thunderstorms in spring and summer are possible.
